The last week I've been looking into Linux VServer. I've read alot on linux-vserver.org. I like alot what I read, this is a good way of doing virtualization. When I was about to install VServer into a Ubuntu machine, I ended up dishing Ubuntu 12.04 LTS in favour of Ubuntu 10.04 LTS, because VServer had no release for 12.04 LTS. I disliked that, but 10.04 has 5 years of support and I wanted to try VServer. Then as I insta 1373632951 M * bluesun The information on linux-vserver.org seems to be very little updated the last two or three years. Christoph Lukas is the primary source (https://launchpad.net/~christoph-lukas/+archive/ppa), and there has been no updates for Linux VServer since 79 weeks ago (last patch) or 124 weeks ago (second last patch), which is 1.5 or 2.5 years ago. 1373632956 M * bluesun My question is as mentioned: Is Linux VServer in development? 1373633302 M * bluesun An alternative question: Should I use something else then Ubuntu? 1373633423 M * Bertl_oO Linux-VServer is basically feature complete, it exists since more than a decade and we are still maintaining it 1373633456 M * Bertl_oO the host/guest distro doesn't matter much, it is suggested to build your own kernel and tools from source, which will always give you a recent version 1373633494 M * Bertl_oO of course, for testing, you can grab one of the distro packages to make it simpler 1373633673 M * bluesun This made sense. 1373633774 M * bluesun Where do I find the source code for VServer? 1373634010 M * bluesun I found it with google :p Is VServer just a modified kernel? And the userspace programs is just a way of talking to the kernel? 1373634326 M * bluesun Another way of putting it: Can I grab the userspace programs for an earlier version of Ubuntu, and compile the kernel from source, and it now works? 1373634371 M * bluesun debootstrap I find information about with google, so this I can manage :) 1373634601 M * daniel_hozac just grab the latest utils. 1373634604 M * daniel_hozac they'll work with any kernel. 1373634654 M * bluesun Ok. 1373635217 Q * Aiken Remote host closed the connection 1373642953 Q * cuba33ci Ping timeout: 480 seconds 1373643687 Q * distemper 1373645946 J * distemper ~user@cable-86-56-68-115.cust.telecolumbus.net 1373646129 J * bonbons ~bonbons@2001:a18:20b:a301:c1b6:c5cc:179d:b39a 1373647584 M * Bertl_oO back now ... 1373647589 N * Bertl_oO Bertl 1373650551 J * cuba33ci ~cuba33ci@114-36-232-196.dynamic.hinet.net 1373651738 Q * Ghislain Quit: Leaving. 1373656594 Q * cuba33ci Read error: Operation timed out 1373658205 J * sannes ~ace@cm-84.211.100.82.getinternet.no 1373659449 M * Bertl off for a nap ... bbl 1373659459 N * Bertl Bertl_zZ 1373659998 Q * grembleb Quit: I Leave 1373662354 Q * sannes Remote host closed the connection 1373662780 J * Aiken ~Aiken@2001:44b8:2168:1000:21f:d0ff:fed6:d63f 1373665317 J * fleischergesell ~fleischer@p4FDF0771.dip0.t-ipconnect.de 1373665377 M * fleischergesell how unstable is 3.9.7-vs2.3.6.5 versus 3.6.11-vs2.3.4.6? 1373665486 Q * _br_ Quit: Bye, thanks for all the fish. 1373665524 J * _br_ ~bjoern_of@213-239-215-232.clients.your-server.de 1373668662 J * Ghislain ~aqueos@adsl1.aqueos.com 1373669227 Q * Ghislain Quit: Leaving. 1373669363 Q * bonbons Quit: Leaving 1373669736 N * Bertl_zZ Bertl 1373669740 M * Bertl back now ... 1373669756 M * Bertl fleischergesell: good question, how stable is 3.6.11 compared to 3.9.7 ? 1373669999 M * fleischergesell hehe 1373670018 M * fleischergesell what are your experiences? 1373670050 M * fleischergesell we've been using 3.6.11 for quite a while now and found it to be very stable 1373670059 M * Bertl it seems to work reasonably fine, no problem have been discovered, despite the fact that I suspected some issues with the 3.9 port 1373670091 M * Bertl so either nobody is using 3.9 (except for me :) or there are no relevant issues 1373670110 M * fleischergesell Okay, thanks. Is there a plan for the next "stable" (as in channel topic) kernel? 1373670299 M * Bertl yes and no, I still think that we will have another stable release (so plans are there) but I also see that folks have little interest in financing a longer stabilization (and 'we the developers' consider the development/testing releases stable enough for our personal use)
