Here's the story: I know the default vserver fstab includes a 16 meg tmpfs on /tmp, which I usually remove, so that the vserver doesn't have any tmpfs mounts whatsoever. On one vserver, I mounted a tmpfs in /var/log/nginx/ (and one other), so now it's missing a /tmp mount (/tmp is just a normal 1777 directory) but has two other tmpfs mounts. When installing python ... 1331675405 M * MooingLemur ... 3.2.2, the end of the configure phase compiles and runs a little C program that tests sem_open(). for that call, glibc looks for a tmpfs mounted on /dev/shm, and failing that, uses another tmpfs found in /proc/mounts. In this case, it used one of my /var/log/ mounts. The problem with this is gentoo's build process happens in a sandbox, and /var/log/... is outside of the allowed set of directories that a build is allowed to touch. (/tmp ... 1331675411 M * MooingLemur ... and /dev/shm are in the allowed list). In order to resolve the build, I just added a /dev/shm tmpfs mount in my vserver's fstab. 1331675459 M * mib_0sjh1h Does any one have any suggestions on monitoring health and performance of vserver? Is snmp the best option? 1331675495 M * MooingLemur Bertl: one of the gentoo dev's understandings is that a tmpfs /dev/shm is a required mount by glibc for POSIX shared memory, though nothing has really noticeably broken because I haven't had it.
